JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- North Florida completed the series sweep of Kennesaw State after taking both end of its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Harmon Stadium. UNF (26-19, 13-8 A-Sun) took the first game 4-1 and blanked the Owls 7-0 in the nightcap.
"Our pitching and defense were excellent today," UNF head coach Dusty Rhodes said. " For us to give up just four runs to this team in the entire series and take all three games was very big for our ball club."
Ryan Amason (5-5) took the mound in game one and stranded nine base runners, scattered seven hits and allowed just one run to earn the win. The 6'-4'' right- hander recorded four strikeouts and issued three walks along the way. Josh Papelbon did not allow a run in the final two innings to earn his team-leading seventh save of the season.
Andrew Chapman went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and Grant Rogers was 2-for-4 at the dish to lead the Ospreys' offense in game one.
Dan Dale (6-3) went the complete game for the Owls, allowing 11 hits and four runs as he took the loss.
The Owls jumped ahead of the Ospreys with one run in the top of the first inning on a RBI groundout by Jay Marrow, but Matt Oxendine answered with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at one.
UNF took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Brandon Diaz led off with a double to left field and scored on an RBI double down the right field line by Chapman. UNF added another run in the fifth as catcher James Belyea lifted his fifth home run of the season over the wall in right field.
Chapman tallied his second RBI of the game in the eighth inning with a single through the right side that scored Jonathan Hodach to complete the Ospreys' scoring.
Brad Johnson (6-1) got the starting assignment in game two and worked seven innings of scoreless ball. The southpaw also tallied five strikeouts and scattered seven hits in the game. Red shirt freshman John Frawley allowed just two hits over the final two innings to preserve the Ospreys first shut out since March 24 when they blanked Florida Atlantic 1-0.
Justin Freeman (4-1) tossed just two innings and allowed four earned runs to suffer his first loss of the season.
Travis Martin, Hodach and Jon Dandridge each had two hits in the nightcap to lead the Ospreys' offensive attack.
UNF exploded for four runs in the bottom of the second with run producing hits by Hodach, Chapman, Oxendine and Dandridge.
Kennesaw was threatening in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and only one out, but Johnson got Marrow to pop out to the catcher and induced Andy Hudson to fly out to center field to end the inning.
UNF plated two runs in the sixth inning as Belyea had an RBI single down the left field line and Rogers followed with a sacrifice fly to right field. Rogers tallied another RBI in the eighth inning on a fielder's choice groundout to score Jimmy Glanville.
The Ospreys will be back action on April 29 when they travel to Nashville, Tenn. to battle Belmont in a three game series. The A-Sun foes will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. EST and wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. EST.
