DeLAND, Fla. - The University of North Florida topped Atlantic Sun Conference-rival Stetson 9-4 on Sunday at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
With the win, the Ospreys (9-6, 2-1 A-Sun) took two of three games from the Hatters (6-8, 1-2 A-Sun) in the squad's first conference series of the season.
The Osprey offense was paced by senior shortstop Matt Oxendine and junior second baseman Andrew Chapman.
Oxendine was singled and doubled, driving in three runs, while Chapman also collected a single and a double, while scoring a run and driving in two more.
All nine UNF starters recorded at least one hit.
UNF senior Ryan Amason (3-1) earned his third win of the season by allowing just one run in 5.2 innings of work. The right-hander scattered nine hits, while striking out three batters and issuing just one base on balls.
The Ospreys jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Senior center fielder Brennan Grogan and sophomore first baseman Jimmy Glanville each drew a walk from Stetson starter Brett Murphy to start the UNF rally. Sophomore designated hitter Travis Martin grounded out to the pitcher to move Grogan to third and Glanville to second base. A passed ball allowed Grogan to score the first run of the game, as Glanville moved to third. On the ensuing at bat, junior left fielder Damon Olinto doubled down the right-field line to plate Glanville and give UNF a 2-0 lead.
UNF extended its lead to four runs in the top of the second inning. Junior catcher James Belyea led off the inning with a double down the left-field line and moved to second base on a sacrifice fly by junior right fielder Jon Dandridge. Chapman followed Dandridge with a double to right field that scored Belyea. Chapman would later come around to score from second base on a single to second base by Oxendine to give the Ospreys a 4-0 lead.
The Ospreys pushed one run across in the top of the fifth inning when Grogan led off with a double to left center, moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Oxendine and scored on a single through the right side by Glanville. The run gave UNF a 5-0 lead.
Stetson sliced into the UNF lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when third baseman Braedyn Pruitt scored on a single up the middle by catcher David Golliner to put the Hatters on the scoreboard. At the end of five innings, UNF led 5-1.
The Ospreys added another run in the top of the sixth inning after senior third baseman Grant Rogers started the inning with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt by Belyea and a ground ball to the right side moved Rogers to third base. Chapman then single to right field to plate Rogers and give UNF a 6-1 lead.
UNF extended its lead to 9-1 by plating three runs in the eighth inning on the strength of a pair of singles by Olinto and Rogers, a double by Oxendine and a pair of intentional walks to Dandridge and Grogan.
The Ospreys will return to action on Tuesday when they play host to Austin Peay. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Harmon Stadium.
