ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of North Florida made history on Sunday by topping in-state rival UCF 6-5 at Jay Bergman Field to complete the first series sweep of its Division I era.
Prior to joining Conference USA, UCF had claimed eight Atlantic Sun Conference baseball championships with its last coming in 2004.
UNF, which didn't collect its first hit until the top of the sixth inning, was led by sophomore Jimmy Glanville and junior James Belyea. Both Glanville and Belyea were 2-for-4 with a run scored. Belyea also drove in a run.
Junior left fielder Damon Olinto was 1-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Senior right-hander Ryan Amason (1-1) worked 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits and four earned runs, while striking out three UCF hitters to earn his first win of the season.
Senior Jared Incinelli tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Ospreys striking out one Golden Knight, while allowing five hits.
Junior submariner Josh Papelbon earned his first save of the season. The Jacksonville, Fla., native tossed one inning allowing one run on three hits.
After being held scoreless for 18.1 innings the Golden Knights put a run on the board when UCF first baseman Kiko Vazquez doubled to right-center field to plate second baseman Matt Ray, who opened the inning with a single through the left side of the infield, to give UCF its first lead of the series.
The Osprey responded immediately knotting the game at a run apiece in the top of the second inning. After drawing a walk from Mitch Herold, senior designated hitter Jonathan Hodach advanced to second on a balk and then took third on a fielder's choice by Belyea. On the ensuing at bat, junior right fielder Jon Dandridge plated Hodach with a sacrifice fly to left-center field.
The Golden Knights added another run in the bottom of the third when Tyson Auer collected a two-out, infield single to start the UCF rally. Auer would score on a single through the left side by Ray that put the Golden Knights on top 2-1.
UNF pushed its second run of the game across in the top of the fourth inning when the Ospreys used back-to-back walks by Olinto and Hodach, a balk by Herold, and a fielder's choice by Belyea that plated Olinto to knot the game at two runs apiece.
UCF went back on top in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Auer singled, stole second and then advanced to third base on a fielder's choice by Ray. He later scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by right fielder Shane Yuclan to give the Golden Knights a 3-2 lead.
UNF took its first lead of the game in the sixth inning when Glanville led the inning off with a single to left field. On the ensuing at bat, Olinto deposited a 1-1 offering over the right-center field fence to give the Ospreys a 4-3 lead. UNF added one more run in the inning when sophomore second baseman Chad Knight doubled down the right-field line to score Belyea, who had reached earlier in the inning on a single to right field.
The Golden Knights cut the Ospreys' lead to a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Auer scored from second base on a single to left field by Ray to bring the score to 5-4.
UNF got the run back in the top of the eighth when the Ospreys loaded the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Grant Rogers plated freshman pinch runner Brian Wilson to give UNF a 6-4 lead before a double play ball helped the Golden Knights escape the inning.
UCF pushed one more run across in the bottom of the ninth to slice the Ospreys' lead to 6-5 before Papelbon got Ryan Williams to ground out to close out the game.
North Florida will return to action on Tuesday when it hits the road to take on South Florida. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. ET.
