DELAND, Fla. - The UNF women's tennis team played its first match as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference on Saturday afternoon, traveling to play nearby Stetson.
The A-Sun era started well enough for the Lady Ospreys - who captured the doubles point to go ahead 1-0 - but turned sour in singles play when they dropped four straight matches en route to a 5-2 loss to the Hatters (6-3).
Lauren Cockbill captured the only singles point for UNF (2-4) at the No. 4 position, upending Stetson's Anna Leonenko, 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles, Stetson's Catherine Canady and Anna Leonenko earned an 8-2 win at the second doubles position against Cockbill and Carolina de Melo to put the Hatters on top early. Vanessa Sanchez and Robin Rogers rallied at the No. 3 position for an 8- 5 victory to tie doubles at 1-1. Catalina Castillo and Florencia Torres then came through at the No. 1 position for the Lady Ospreys, winning 9-7.
"We played much better in doubles and got good results," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "I'm happy about the way we played. In singles, we are still missing confidence. The girls have not had a chance to get in the rhythm of the season. We are in great shape and are striking the ball well, we just haven't gotten comfortable."
UNF returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it travels to face nationally ranked Division II foe Valdosta State at 1 p.m. The Blazers are ranked eighth in the latest ITA national rankings.
