VALDOSTA, Ga. - The North Florida women's tennis team upended eighth-ranked Valdosta State 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in a battle of former Division II rivals.
The Lady Ospreys - who are in their first season at the Division I level - got an upset win early in the match when the doubles team of Catalina Castillo and Florencia Torres knocked off VSU's Annika Biro and Anne Corten. The Lady Blazer tandem came into the match ranked No. 3 nationally.
The Lady Ospreys (3-4) then secured the doubles point - and a 1-0 lead - with an 8-1 win by Vanessa Sanchez and Robin Rogers at the No. 3 position.
In singles, Valdosta State took wins at the top three spots, but UNF blitzed the bottom half of the VSU lineup with 6-0, 6-0 victories from Lauren Cockbill (No. 4), Carolina de Melo (No. 5) and Bojana Ducanovic (No. 6).
Valdosta State's Annika Biro, ranked 28th nationally, also survived an upset bid by Torres, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 singles position for the Lady Blazers (1-1).
UNF will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when the SunTrust River City Rumble rivalry series begins on the tennis courts. The UNF men and women will host city rival Jacksonville at 3 p.m. at the UNF Tennis Complex.
