JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The
University of North Florida women's basketball team
cut a 16-point second-half deficit to two in the final
minutes of play against Florida Atlantic on Saturday,
but couldn't complete the comeback in a 76-69 loss
at UNF Arena.
FAU (14-9, 13-3 A-Sun) won its third in a row with
the victory, while UNF (9-14, 7-8 A-Sun) dropped its
second game in a row and fell for the second-
straight time at home.
"It was a physical game," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "It was a war. We spent a
tremendous amount of energy coming back and
committed some crucial turnovers at the end of the
game, but we still had a chance to tie it."
Andrea Dill helped lead the comeback charge for UNF,
scoring 11 of her game-high 19 points in the final
seven minutes of play, with the final two points in
that run cutting the FAU advantage to 68-66.
Dill has now scored at least 18 points in three of her
last four outings.
A Sally N'Diaye layup put the Lady Owls ahead 58-
42, but UNF countered with a 13-2 run to cut the
FAU advantage to 60-55, before eventually pulling
within two.
A turnover by Jackie Beik in the final minute of play,
and Dill's fifth foul helped lead to four FAU points
from the foul line that sealed the win.
Along with Dill, who tied a season high with four
blocks, Beik and Jennifer Bowen also scored in double
figures. Beik finished the game with 15 points, while
Bowen had a career high 12 points. Jennifer Guldager
led all players with nine rebounds.
FAU won the battle of the boards 47-45, as Brittney
Crenshaw pulled down a team high eight rebounds for
the Lady Owls.
Sontavia Williams led the Lady Owls with 18 points,
but only hit 5-of-20 shots from the field. She was 0-
for-5 beyond the 3-point arc and hit 8-of-11 free
throws.
Both teams spent their fair share of time at the
charity stripe, reflecting the physical nature of the
game. UNF hit 22-of-26 foul shots, while the Lady
Owls hit 18-of-31.
The Lady Ospreys trailed 18-9 in the first 10 minutes
of play, but rallied thanks to a 3-point play by Dill
and a Bowen jumper on an inbound play that found
the net as the shot clock expired. That helped spark
a 7-0 run that pulled UNF within two. FAU never
trailed in the half and led 38-32 at the break.
The Lady Ospreys are back on the court Monday
night when they head down the road to take on
cross-town rival Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rivalry. The battle for the
Old Wooden Barrel is tied 5-5. Fans who cannot make
it to the game at Swisher Arena can watch it live on
CSS or listen to it on 1010-AM WIOJ in Jacksonville
or on the World Wide Web at www.unfospreys.com.
