JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University evened up its season series with the University of North Florida on Monday night, holding a lead most of the way against the Lady Ospreys in a 56-51 win at Swisher Gymnasium.
UNF (9-14, 7-9 A-Sun) won the opening game with JU (8-15, 5-11 A-Sun) earlier this season, but only held a brief lead in the second half. The loss was the third in a row for UNF.
Three Lady Dolphins scored in double figures, led Regina Omoite who scored 15 points off the bench. Tamara Hubbard led the Lady Ospreys with 14 points, all of which came in the second half.
"We know Tamara is an offensive player and does a good job on that end of the court," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "She got us a lot of points, but we still got beat."
Gregoire nailed four free throws in the final minute of play and Anna Haberlein stepped out of bounds before she was able to fire off a 3-point attempt in the final seconds of play. The turnover helped seal the win for the Dolphins and keep them in the hunt for the A-Sun Tournament.
A pair of Andrea Dill free throws gave the Lady Ospreys a 33-32 advantage with 15:56 to play, giving UNF its first lead of the game.
Neither team scored for the next three minutes. Sheena Carpenter finally broke the drought with a jumper that sparked an 11-2 run. A pair of Hubbard free throws made it a 54-51 game in the final seconds of play, but UNF got no closer.
Jackie Beik followed Hubbard with eight points, while Jennifer Guldager scored six points and pulled down a game high eight rebounds.
UNF won the battle of the boards 35-34.
Sheena Carpenter finished the contest with 12 points, while Ashley Williams finished with 11 points and a team high seven rebounds.
The victory gave JU a 6-5 advantage in the SunTrust River City Rumble.
UNF trailed 30-24 at the break after Carpenter sank a jumper from the free throw line just before the final buzzer of the half. The Lady Ospreys trailed by as many as 10 in the half before cutting it to four in the final minute of play.
The Lady Ospreys will host Belmont on Thursday at 5 p.m. Live coverage of the game can be heard at www.unfospreys.com.
