COLUMBUS, Ga. - The University of North Florida baseball team lost game one of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader 7-3 at Columbus State on Saturday afternoon but battled back behind the masterful pitching of Kyle Aylor and Jared Incinelli in game two to post a 1-0 win and earn a split with the Cougars at Ragsdale Field.
The Ospreys (28-10, 13-7 PBC) scored the game's only run in the second game when Dennis Anderson's sacrifice bunt drove home Kevin Johnson from third with nobody out in the fifth inning, setting up Incinelli's dominating finish. The junior reliever came on with nobody out and runners at second and third in the bottom of the fifth inning and wriggled UNF off the hook - striking out the first two batters he faced before inducing an inning-ending groundout to short.
After a scoreless sixth inning by Columbus State (17-22, 7-13 PBC), Incinelli allowed a leadoff single by CSU's Billy Howard to lead off the Cougars' final at-bat in the seven-inning game. After a flyout to left, Incinelli induced a game-ending double play from CSU catcher Trent Bianco to end the game.
Aylor (6-1) pitched four scoreless innings, allowing four hits, to earn the win. Incinelli allowed one hit in three innings to record his third save.
Columbus State's Brian Baker (5-4) was the tough-luck loser, allowing three hits and the decisive run in seven inning. Baker struck out 12 UNF batters.
In game one, the Cougars scored four runs off UNF starter Ryan Amason in the first inning on back-to-back two-out, two-run singles by Bianco and Brad Shea. CSU added another run in the second on a David Brown home run to move ahead 5-0.
UNF answered with Marion Knowles' two- run homer in the fourth and added another run in the fifth on Mike Fryrear's RBI-single, but the Ospreys couldn't muster anything else against CSU starter Nolan Pendleton. The Cougars eventually added runs in the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach.
Pendleton (4-4) allowed six hits and three earned runs in eight strong innings for the win, while Amason (5-2) allowed nine hits and six earned runs in six innings.
Bianco was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for CSU. David Brown and Stephen Worrell were each 3-for-4 for the Cougars. Josh Howard was 2-for-4 with a run scored for UNF, while Fryrear was 2-for-3.
The teams will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon with a final game at 1 p.m. Audio from the game will be webcast at www.unfospreys.com.
