JACKSONVILLE, Fla - Four hits in two games were good enough for an opportunistic University of North Florida softball team in a pair of Peach Belt Conference wins against Augusta State on Saturday at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Lady Ospreys (32-6, 13-3 PBC) took advantage of a little wildness from the Augusta State (26-14, 8-6 PBC) pitching staff to capture a 2-1 win in the opener and a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
"We stayed in the hitting zone today and that benefited us," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We played good defense and Tori Ahern and Kelli Pitts had good stuff again."
Ahern and Pitts each pitched complete games for the Lady Ospreys, both giving up only one earned run.
Ahern (19-3) stared down fellow freshman sensation Amy Dumas in the first game, throwing a three-hitter that saw her give up one earned run on three hits.
Dumas (15-5) got the best of the battle early on, not allowing a hit until the bottom of the fifth inning. Katie Field delivered that to begin the inning, and was then lifted for Dyann Busse. Kelli Rutenbar came through four batters later with an RBI single to drive home Busse and tie the game 1-1.
Four Dumas walks led to the winning run in the sixth inning, as Laura Hanstein drew a free pass to start the inning, then moved to third after Randalyn Rogers and Field reached on walks. Ashley Parenteau was credited with the game-winning RBI when she was issued a free pass with two outs. It was her fourth walk of the game.
Parenteau helped Ahern complete the win in the top of the seventh inning, throwing out ASU first baseman Leigh Robbins from her knees on a ball that ricocheted off Hanstein's glove at third and bounced over to a sliding Parenteau. She was quick enough to stop direction, field the ball and make the throw from the hole between third and short.
Fresh off that play, Parenteau helped get the UNF offense going in the second game, leading off the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line. ASU starter Christine Gisler (10-7) helped the UNF offense out from there, issuing three-straight walks after a Jessica Matta error helped Christina Evans reach safely.
By the time the first inning had ended, UNF scored six runs on two Lady Jaguar errors and three Gisler walks. The Augusta right hander did not allow another walk the rest of the game.
Megan Hendrix drove home UNF's final two runs of the inning with a single to right that scored Hanstein and Rogers.
Michelle Weirauch got Augusta State on the board in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly that brought home Brooke Henson. That run barely made a dent in UNF's lead, as Pitts completed the six hitter to earn her second win this week.
The Lady Ospreys will close out their home schedule on Sunday when they host PBC foe USC Upstate in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Seniors Hanstein and Field will both be honored between the games for their two years at UNF.
