JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 4, 2005) - The University of North Florida baseball team stayed perfect in Kennel Club Classic action, pounding out 13 hits in a 10-2 win against Brown on Friday night at Harmon Stadium.
Ten different Ospreys registered hits to help UNF (11-6) score all 10 of its runs in the first five innings of play. That was more than enough for Kyle Aylor (3-0) and the rest of the UNF pitching staff, which allowed only two earned runs on seven hits.
"We got a quality outing from Aylor tonight," said UNF assistant coach Bob Shepherd, who filled in for Dusty Rhodes after he had to attend to family business. "The offense really got us going tonight and we got a lot of players in the game."
Brennan Grogan started the game on the right foot for UNF, leading off the bottom of the first inning with a home run to right, before driving home another run in the second. He finished the night 2-for-3 at the plate, before Josh Howard replaced him and went 2-for-2. Brooks West also pounded out a couple of hits and drove home two.
Aylor only allowed two hits in five innings of work, striking out seven. The UNF pitching staff has struck out 41 hitters over the last three nights, while its starters have not allowed a run in 19 innings of work.
"The starters have pitched well," Shepherd said. "We have to pitch to win. If we can stop them early, it's going to give our offense a chance."
UNF's offense took full advantage in the fourth inning on Friday, scoring six runs to break the game open. Damon Olinto and Sadry Café each drove home a pair of runs with doubles, before West ended the scoring in the fourth with a single that plated a pair of runs.
Howard drove home the Ospreys' final run of the game, driving home James Belyea with a two-out double in the bottom of the fifth.
Brown's Paul Christian Homered to right-center off of Ben Pincus to put the Bears (0-1) on the board in the sixth. Danny Hughes doubled home a run in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Hughes and Devin Thomas each had a pair of hits for the Bears.
Ethan Silverstein (0-1) suffered the loss on the hill for Brown, allowing nine earned runs in four innings of work. He walked three and struck out nine.
UNF is back on the field Saturday at noon when it hosts Michigan State. The game can be heard live on the air at 1010-AM WIOJ
