JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida second baseman Mike Fryrear drove in three runs, including the game-winner on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning, to help the UNF baseball team rally for a 5-4 win over Iowa in a rain-shortened Kennel Club Classic game on Tuesday night at Harmon Stadium.
The Ospreys scored runs on three sacrifice flies in the game, including two by Fryrear, who also singled and drove home another run in his only official at-bat. Josh Howard was 2-for-2 with two runs scored for the Ospreys (17-8), who rallied from a 4-2 deficit to improve to 7-1 in Kennel Club Classic play and win their second game against a Big Ten school this season.
The game was called due to rain with one out in the bottom of the eighth.
Travis Martin (1-0) earned the win in relief for UNF, pitching 3.2 scoreless innings. Aaron Reasland suffered the loss for Iowa (4-5), allowing a hit and the decisive run in 1.2 innings of work.
UNF jumped ahead early, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Marion Knowles' two-out, RBI-single and moved ahead 2-0 on Fryrear's second-inning sacrifice fly, which scored Howard. Iowa answered quickly, however, against UNF starter Tony Polster in the top of the third.
The Hawkeyes sent nine men to the plate and scored four runs to take a 4-2 lead, the big blow coming on Nate Price's two-run triple. Andy Lytle followed with an RBI-single and later scored following a UNF error with two outs.
The Ospreys tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on a Judd Loveland sacrifice fly and Fryrear's RBI-single, which scored Brooks West. Fryrear's sacrifice fly then pushed the Ospreys ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth after Howard led off the inning with a single, advanced to second a groundout and stole third.
UNF concludes play in the Kennel Club Classic on Wednesday night when it faces Bradley, winners of 10 straight games, at Harmon Stadium. First pitch is set for 7 p.m., and the game can be heard on the World Wide Web at www.unfospreys.com.
