JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Ohio State pounded out 19 hits and belted three home runs against six North Florida pitchers on a windy day at Harmon Stadium, carrying the Buckeyes to a 16-10 win in the Kennel Club Classic.
Ohio State (3-3) scored three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and then broke the game open with a seven-run seventh inning to hand UNF (14-7) its first loss in the Kennel Club Classic in seven games. The win snapped the Ospreys' six-game winning streak and avenged an 8-0 win by the UNF over the Buckeyes in last season's tournament.
UNF took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Matt Oxendine that scored Mike Fryrear from third, but the Buckeyes answered with three runs in their next at-bat to take the lead for good. Paul Farinacci's two-run double and was followed by Jedidiah Stephen's run-scoring single.
Three UNF errors the next inning led to four more OSU runs to push the Buckeyes ahead 7-1. The Buckeyes blew the game open in the seventh, aided by a Stephen two-run homer.
Jason Zoeller and Stephen were both 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Buckeyes, while Wes Schirtzinger was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Starter Jeremy Papelbon (1-1) suffered the loss for UNF, allowing seven hits and seven runs in 4.1 innings. Only three of the runs were earned. Trent Luyster (2-1) started and earned the win for OSU, allowing 11 hits and six runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings.
Sadry Café was 3-for-4 with four RBIs for UNF, while Mike Fryrear was 3-for-4.
