JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 23, 2005) - University of North Florida senior center Brittney Davis went out in style on Wednesday night at UNF Arena, giving her head coach a milestone in the process.
Davis scored a career-high 20 points in her final home game on "Senior Night" for the Lady Ospreys, keying a strong second-half surge that gave UNF a 75-47 win over Armstrong Atlantic State in Peach Belt Conference action.
The victory was No. 300 in UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer's career, improving her overall record to 300-243 in 20 seasons as a college head coach.
Armstrong Atlantic State (0-29, 0-15 PBC) came out strong after being forced to forfeit 17 wins earlier in the week due to the use of an ineligible player. UNF (12-14, 6-9 PBC) snapped a 32-32 halftime tie by blitzing the Lady Pirates over the final 20 minutes, however, shooting 76 percent (19-of-25) and outscoring AASU 43-15 the rest of the way.
Tamara Hubbard added 14 points for UNF, hitting a game-tying 3-pointer at the first half buzzer to pull the Lady Ospreys even.
"It was a great night for our seniors," Tappmeyer said. "I thought Brittney ended her home career on an outstanding note. We shot the ball well in the second half and played about as good a half of basketball as a team can play. I was proud of the win."
The Lady Ospreys shot 62 percent for the game (31- of-50) and 57 percent from 3-point range (8-of-14). They also outrebounded AASU, 39-21.
Armstrong came out firing in the first half, taking a 7- 2 lead in the first five minutes and maintained that for most of the half. The Lady Pirates shot 52 percent over the first 20 minutes and kept the Lady Ospreys at bay until the final four minutes. Armstrong led 29-23 at 4:04 mark, but UNF finished with a 9-3 run - capped by Hubbard's 3-pointer at the final horn - to pull even.
In the second half, an 18-4 run out of the gates put the game away early for UNF, and the Lady Ospreys kept the pressure on from there.
The Lady Pirates shot just 18 percent in the second half (5-of-28) and finished at 33 percent for the game.
Nine of the 12 Lady Ospreys who played in the game scored. Briana Milam led AASU with 11 points, followed by Alicia Durham with 10.
Seniors Chelsea Headley and Jamala Mitchell also played their final home games for the Lady Ospreys.
UNF closes out the regular season with a game at Kennesaw State on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m., with the game to be carried live on WIOJ-AM 1010 in Jacksonville and via the World Wide Web at www.unf.edu/sports.
