JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2005) - Despite playing without starting forward Alana Mountfield and losing Chelsea Headley to a leg injury in the second half, the University of North Florida women's basketball team managed to shut down Kennesaw State in a 68-52 win at UNF Arena on Saturday.
The victory halted the Lady Ospreys' two-game losing streak and pulled UNF (10-13, 4-8 PBC) even with the Lady Owls (12-11, 4-8 PBC) in the southern division of the Peach Belt Conference.
Three Lady Ospreys scored in double figures in the win, led by Jackie Beik, who finished with 17. Tamara Hubbard also scored 15, while Headley had 10 points when she left the game in the second half. Brittney Davis also finished the game with 10 points.
Play got off to a slow start with only six points scored in the first five minutes of play. The Lady Ospreys eventually led 24-16 at the break on the strength of eight points from Beik.
UNF surged ahead to a 15-point advantage when Tamara Hubbard nailed a pair of free throws with 14:39 remaining. The lead was never in jeopardy from there. Hubbard hit 5-of-10 shots from the field for her sixth game in double figures this season.
After averaging double-digit 3-point attempts in its last three outings, UNF stayed inside the arc on Saturday, taking only four long-range shots and draining three of those. Along with Hubbard and Beik, Karli Knudsen also knocked down a 3-pointer. Knudsen finished the game with seven points.
Jamala Mitchell led the Lady Ospreys with nine rebounds off the bench, while Beik finished with seven. UNF won the battle of the boards 41-37.
PBC leading scorer Shavonder Clarke was the only Lady Owl in double figures, finishing with a game high 21 points. Danielle Bates followed her with nine points.
UNF is on the road Wednesday when it travels to Clayton State for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Lady Lakers.
