MORROW, Ga. (Feb. 16, 2005) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team couldn't hold on to a five-point second half lead on Wednesday night in a 51-46 loss to Clayton College & State in Morrow, Ga.
UNF (10-14, 4-9 PBC) held a 39-34 advantage in the second half, but allowed the Lady Lakers (18-6, 10-3 PBC) to finish the contest on a 17-7 run in the last 12 minutes of play.
Jamika Hindsman broke a 41-41 tie with a layup at the 3:41 mark to give the Lady Lakers a lead they would not surrender the rest of the way.
CC&SU missed three free throws in the last minute of play, but the Lady Ospreys couldn't take advantage until Jackie Beik made it a 48-45 contest with a 3-pointer at the 14-second mark. That's all the closer the Lady Ospreys would pull however, as they dropped their third game in four outings.
UNF was without the services of starting forward Alana Mountfield and reserve center Chelsea Headley, who were both out with injuries.
CC&SU's Shelcey Harp led all scorers with 12 points, while Brittney Davis scored 10 for UNF and pulled down five rebounds.
UNF's Jamala Mitchell finished with a team high six rebounds, helping the Lady Ospreys win the battle of the boards 36-32. Karli Knudsen had eight assists to lead all players.
UNF got off to an early 6-2 lead thanks to a Karli Knudsen 3-pointer and a free throw the next trip down the court. CC&SU eventually took over, forcing UNF into 17 first-half turnovers.
Davis followed a Knudsen miss with a layup to pull the Lady Ospreys within three at the half, 27-24.
North Florida returns to UNF Arena on Saturday for a 2 p.m. homecoming matchup with USC Aiken. Audio coverage of the game can be heard locally on 1010 AM WIOJ.
