JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 29, 2005) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team could never catch Lander Saturday in a 58-51 loss at UNF Arena.
With the defeat UNF (8-11, 2-6 PBC) saw its two-game winning streak snapped, while Lander (9-9, 4-4 PBC) won its second-straight contest.
"We've been aggressive going to the basket lately, but ended up settling for a lot of 3-point attempts today," UNF point guard Kayla Sheldon said. "We weren't taking advantage of our opportunities."
Lander got a heavy dose of Natasha Hemphill in the opening half, then turned to its leading scorer - Jacquay White - in the second half. Hemphill finished the game with 13 points, scoring nine in the first half, while White scored 12.
White hit a baseline jumper with 1:39 left in the game to give Lander a 51-39 advantage and all but seal the win for the Lady Bearcats.
Jennifer Hukill sunk a couple of free throws on Lander's next trip down the court, forcing UNF to make a comeback behind the 3-point line. The Lady Ospreys only hit one the rest of the way and shot the ball at a 14.8 percent clip beyond the arc (4-for-27). The 27 3-point attempts were UNF's most this season. Sheldon had her most active day beyond the arc, hitting 2-of-9 long-range shots.
"That was not by design," Sheldon said. "I had open shots and we had rebounders underneath, so I thought it was a good idea."
Brittney Davis led the Lady Ospreys with 14 points, followed by Tamara Hubbard who had 10. Sheldon finished the game with eight points, while Alanna Mountfield and Jamala Mitchell each had six. Davis also pulled down a game high nine rebounds. White followed her with eight rebounds for the Lady Bearcats.
UNF started off well beyond the 3-point arc, as Mountfield sunk a long-range shot from the baseline. Lander took the lead at 6-5 on an Ashley Johnson jumper and never trailed again.
The Lady Ospreys went on an 8-3 run to cut the Lander advantage to 22-21, but let the Lady Bearcats score the last six points of the half.
Lander outrebounded UNF 23-14 in the opening half, but the Lady Ospreys started to attack the glass in the second half. Davis was the leader of that group, pulling down six offensive boards, which helped lead to easy points.
A pair of Hubbard free throws pulled UNF within two at 45-41, but that was as close as the Lady Ospreys would come to the lead.
Lander ultimately won the battle of the boards, 40-36. UNF turned the ball over 19 times on the afternoon, compared to 21 for the Lady Bearcats.
UNF will remain home when it hosts Georgia College & State on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
