JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (February 2, 2005) - It might have been cold and rainy outside in Jacksonville on Wednesday but inside UNF Arena, the Lady Ospreys were red hot and raining 3-pointers in an 85-59 win against Georgia College & State.
UNF (9-11, 3-6 PBC) hit 15 shots from beyond the 3-point arc, falling one shy of the all-time Peach Belt record, while shattering the team's former all-time high of nine. The 26-point victory also avenged a 17-point loss the Lady Ospreys suffered at the hands of GC&SU (13-6, 4-4 PBC) two weeks ago.
"We really shot the ball well and the team fed off of each other," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "Our defense led to scoring on the other end of the court and hitting the 3-point shot softened things up for Brittney Davis inside."
Karli was one of three players who helped build that cushion for Davis inside, hitting 5-of-8 long-range shots and finishing the game with a career high 21 points. Tamara Hubbard and Alana Mountfield also set career highs in the win. Hubbard knocked down 3-of-4 shots beyond the arc for 18 points, while Mountfield was 5-of-7, finishing the game with 17 points.
Their production allowed Davis to bang on the inside. She finished the contest with 12 points and tied teammate Jackie Beik with eight rebounds. Jamala Mitchell led all players with 12 rebounds.
UNF dominated the boards, pulling down 44 rebounds, compared to 28 for the Lady Bobcats.
After Alicia Porter got Georgia College off to a 2-0 advantage, Knudsen got things rolling for the Lady Ospreys with a baseline jumper that sparked a 6-2 UNF run out of the gates. Georgia College took a 6-5 lead on an Ashley Williams 3-pointer, but did not lead again.
Mountfield's first 3-pointer of the game gave UNF a 9-6 lead, which quickly turned into a 20-10 advantage on another Mountfield 3-point shot.
UNF closed the half on a 27-11 run to lead 47-21.
The Lady Ospreys kept the intensity on in the second half of play, scoring the first seven points of the half, which were capped by a Knudsen 3.
"The second half we came out and played really well," Tappmeyer said. "We got a huge block from Brittney [Davis] on their second trip down the court."
The hot shooting spread to the bench for UNF when Sarah Wallace, fresh off an ankle injury, got back into the lineup and drained a couple of 3s in the last 10 minutes of play. She finished the game with seven points.
LaWanna Leon led the Lady Bobcats with 18 points off the bench to go along with three steals. Renea Phelps finished with 11 points for GC&SU.
UNF is back on the road Saturday when it heads to UNC Pembroke for a 2 p.m. tipoff with the Lady Braves.
