COLUMBUS, Ga. (Jan. 26, 2005) - As the University of North Florida women's basketball team took the court for its pregame shoot around against Columbus State University on Wednesday night at the Lumpkin Center, head coach Mary Tappmeyer sat calmly in an easy chair watching her team.
She must have known something to have so much confidence coming into a game against the best team in the Peach Belt Conference. Actually that confidence finally set in during the last minute of a 65-58 victory.
"We were gaining confidence as the game went on," Tappmeyer said. "We had a couple of breaks go our way and really stayed focused the whole game."
UNF (8-10, 2-5 PBC) controlled the boards, outrebounding Columbus State (13-5, 6-1 PBC) 42-30 and controlled the scoreboard most of the contest, only trailing briefly in the first and second halves of play.
"We rebounded well, holding them to one and done most of the trips down the court," Tappmeyer said. "Brittney Davis and Jackie Beik gave us some huge rebounds and Kayla Shleldon, our point guard, gave us five rebounds as well."
Beik led the team with nine rebounds, while Davis had eight.
Three Lady Ospreys scored in double figures, led by Davis and Tamara Hubbard who each had 14 points. Alana Mountfield followed them with 12, while Jackie Beik and Karli Knudsen had seven.
Cherwonna Walker had a team high 11 points for Columbus State.
UNF led by as many as eight points in the opening half of play, but watched Columbus State cut that advantage to three by the end of the half with a brief 3-0 run.
The two teams traded punches in the second half, but UNF was able to hang onto its lead most of the way, only losing the advantage once. Jamala Mitchell and Hubbard helped close the game out for the Lady Ospreys, each hitting 2-of-2 free throws to give the Lady Ospreys their final advantage.
UNF returns to play on Saturday when it hosts Lander at 2 p.m.
