PEMBROKE, N.C (Feb. 13, 2005) - UNC Pembroke pitcher Mike Mattox pitched eight strong innings, and his teammates pounded out 11 hits against North Florida pitching, as the Braves completed a three-game sweep of the nation's No. 4 team with a 9-4 win on Sunday afternoon.
The sweep was only the third against the Ospreys (4-4, 0-3 PBC) in their eight seasons in the Peach Belt and the first since Francis Marion did so in 2003. UNC Pembroke (11-0, 3-0 PBC) won its first ever series against the Ospreys and extended its winning streak to 16 games dating to last season.
The Braves scored five runs in the second inning off UNF starter Jacob Dixon (0-2), who breezed through the first two innings before running into a wall in the third. UNCP pounded out five consecutive hits against Dixon to take a commanding 5-0 lead, and the Ospreys never recovered.
A two-run home run by UNF's Brett Maloley in the top of the eighth cut the Ospreys' deficit to 5-3, but the Braves added four more runs off UNF reliever Jared Incinelli in the bottom half of the inning to pull away again.
Jeremy Papelbon pitched five innings in relief of Dixon, allowing just one run and two hits - that run coming after he walked the leadoff batter in the eighth.
Sadry Café was 3-for-5 for UNF, hitting his first home run of the year in the ninth. Maloley was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Cole Franks was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Braves, while Jason Morales was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Mattox (2-0) earned the win, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in eight innings. Jon Spell pitched the ninth.
The Ospreys return to action on Wednesday when they travel to St. Augustine to face Flagler. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
