JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 12, 2005) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team used a mix of the old and the new to defeat Edward Waters 61-35 in an exhibition matchup Saturday night at UNF Arena.
The Lady Ospreys distributed the offensive production between senior Jackie Beik and newcomers Jennifer Guldager, Jennifer Bowen and Andrea Dill. Guldager, a freshman from Sunrise, Fla., led the Lady Ospreys with 11 points, while Beik followed her with 10 points and Dill - a transfer from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College - finished the contest with nine points and eight rebounds.
"I liked our effort, especially by our younger people," said UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We played a lot of people tonight."
Fourteen Lady Ospreys saw action in the win, with nine of them registering a point.
UNF only trailed for a total of nine seconds after EWC's Ruth Waters hit the opening basket of the game. The Lady Ospreys shot 46 percent from the field for the game, hitting 52 percent of their shots in the second half.
One thing that never gets old for Tappmeyer is good play on the defensive end. That was on display Saturday when UNF held the Tigers to 20 percent shooting from the field and out-rebounded EWC 29-20 on the defensive boards.
The Lady Ospreys bounced out of the gates to a 12-2 lead before taking a 29-16 advantage into the locker room. UNF put the game away for good with an 18-0 run in the second half that gave it a 53-21 advantage. Eight of those points during that run came from Guldager.
Dill and Bowen provided the spark for UNF in the first half, with Bowen leading all UNF players with eight points. Dill chipped in five points and a couple of blocks. She finished the game with three blocks to go along with eight rebounds, four steals and only one turnover.
"Dill is a force inside," Tappmeyer said. "We need big games from her while we bring Antoinette [Reames] and Jennifer Guldager along. She can have big nights. I especially liked her effort on the defensive end."
Waters led all players with 17 points on 8-of-22 shooting from the field, while EWC's Aishia Thornton was the game's leading rebounder with 11.
UNF will get its regular season started when it travels to Winthrop on Nov. 18 for a 7 p.m. matchup. Fans can listen to live coverage of the game at www.unfospreys.com.
