ROCK HILL, S.C. - University of North Florida forward Jackie Beik scored a career high 27 points, pulled down a career high 10 rebounds and recorded her first double-double in UNF's 73-48 win against Winthrop Friday night in Rock Hill, S.C.
Beik helped UNF (1-0) open its NCAA Division I era in style with a dominating performance inside and out. The senior knocked down three shots beyond the 3-point arc and outplayed the Lady Eagles' 6-6 freshman center Lisa Koop, hitting 10-of-13 shots overall.
"I just kept up my confidence level and went at it as hard as I could," Beik said. "The level of play didn't matter to us. We played well as a team. We were a little nervous in the first two minutes, but we settled down and played with intensity the rest of the way."
The win was the 302nd in the career of head coach Mary Tappmeyer and gave UNF its 12th-straight win in a season opener.
"We never backed down," Tappmeyer said. "We switched our defense up in the second half and played more aggressive."
That defensive change worked like a charm, as UNF's trapping style of play and 2-3 zone in the second half held the Lady Eagles (0-1) to only 15 points.
UNF took a four-point advantage into the locker room, and never allowed Winthrop to pull closer than two in the second half.
The Lady Ospreys put the game away with a 14-1 run to take a 58-43 lead with 6:10 to play. UNF then closed the game on a 15-5 run.
Beik wasn't the only player to score in double figures, as Tamara Hubbard also scored 17, while Andrea Dill scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds and three blocks in her Lady Osprey debut.
UNF had trouble containing Tiffany Rodd in the first half after the freshman hit five 3-pointers and scored 17 points. Rodd only scored five points in the second and led the Lady Eagles with 23 points.
She helped keep Winthrop in the game in the first half of play, matching UNF's barrage of seven 3-pointers with five of her own.
UNF held a seven-point advantage most of the opening half, but only led by one when Rodd hit a 3-pointer to make it a 34-33 contest. Dill matched that long-range shot with a 3-pointer of her own to give the Lady Ospreys their 37-34 halftime advantage.
Kayla Sheldon finished the night with four points for UNF to go along with four assists and three steals. Those steals moved her up to sixth on the all-time UNF steals list ahead of Lady Osprey assistant coach Nancy Miller. Sheldon now has 157 career assists.
UNF is back in action on Tuesday night when it travels to Daytona Beach to take on Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. Live audio of the game can be heard at www.unfospreys.com/.
