With 27 years in the Division-I coaching ranks, which includes more than two decades in the ASUN Conference, Bobby Kennen is in his first season at the helm of North Florida in 2025-26.Â
Now in his 17th season at North Florida, Kennen was elevated to Head Coach after the departure of Matthew Driscoll on May 22, 2025. Kennen was previously promoted to Associate Head Coach in August 2012 after he joined the staff in an Assistant Coach role in April 2009.Â
An integral part of the program’s success, Kennen assisted Driscoll to become the winningest coach in North Florida and ASUN Conference history. Â
Kennen served on the staff that helped North Florida secure three ASUN Regular Season Championships in 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2019-20, three appearances in the ASUN Championship title game in 2010-11, 2014-15 and 2016-17 and a ASUN Championship title in 2014-15. He was on staff for the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2015.Â
In 2024-25, Kennen assisted North Florida to defeat two Power Four opponents on the road in the first week of the season – South Carolina and Georgia Tech. It marked the program’s first-ever wins against a SEC and ACC opponent. Kennen has been part of four Power Four wins – Purdue, Illinois, South Carolina and Georgia Tech – while at North Florida.
North Florida received its first-ever votes in the Associated Press (AP) poll with 14 votes on Nov. 11, 2024.Â
Kennen has been on staff for all three of the program’s 20 or more win seasons with 23 in 2014-15, 22 in 2015-16 and 21 in 2019-20.Â
Kennen has coached 20 All-ASUN and nine ASUN All-Freshman Team honorees while at North Florida.Â
North Florida has led the nation in total threes made three times (409 in 2024-25, 391 in 2019-20, 411 in 2015-16) with Kennen on staff.
Following an appearance in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, Kennen assisted the program to secure a top-20 ranking in the final CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll. Prior to the 2010-11 season, Kennen was voted as one of the top assistant coaches in the ASUN Conference, selected by the league’s head coaches.Â
Prior to North Florida, Kennen served as the top assistant at Campbell for four seasons from 2005-09. While at Campbell, Kennen helped turn around a program that won just two games in the 2004-05 season to finish 11-9 in the ASUN Conference and total 14 wins in 2008-09.Â
Kennen served as an Assistant Coach at Jacksonville for five seasons from 2000-05.Â
In 2002, Kennen was appointed to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Assistant Coaches Committee, serving all assistant coaches with their needs and concerns related to the profession.
Kennen’s career also included stints at Wichita State in 1999-2000 and Central Florida Community College in 1998-99.
At the high school level, Kennen was the Head Coach at Williston High School in Williston, Fla. for three seasons in 1995-98. At Williston, he led the Red Devils to three-straight Suwannee Conference Championships, earning Coach of the Year honors each season.
Kennen started his coaching career at Santaluces High School in Lantana, Fla.
Kennen was a four-year starter at guard at Palm Beach Atlantic University from 1989-93, earning 1993 PBAC Athlete of the Year honors. The Ocala, Fla., native served as team captain for three years and finished his career as Palm Beach Atlantic’s all-time single-game (20), single-season (294) and career (918) assists leader.
Kennen graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and Physical Education from Palm Beach Atlantic University in 1993. He then went on to earn a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Florida in 1998.
Kennen was born in Lakewood, N.J., and has a daughter, Regan, and a son, Trey. Regan played volleyball at Coker University. Kennen resides in Jacksonville, Fla.Â
