OXFORD, Ala. - A strong fifth inning from the No. 1-seeded North Florida softball squad pulled them ahead of No. 4-seeded Stetson for the 2-1 victory in its first appearance at the ASUN Championship tournament on Thursday afternoon at Choccolocco Park.
The Ospreys are now 7-0 against Stetson this season with three wins at home, three wins on the road and one on neutral grounds. It was also the 43rd win of the year to sit alone at the top as the team with the most single-season victories in Division I program history.
Both teams pitched shutout ball through four frames after each of them found themselves in close scoring situations. UNF got out of the first with Hatter runners in scoring position, while the Ospreys recorded early hits but nothing to make of it.
After a pitching change in the circle for the Stetson, UNF took advantage in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI-single from Allison Benning to score the first run of the game. Kirsten Caravaca scored Benning to add another run in the fifth and extend the lead to a pair.
Kylah Berry took over for Benning in the circle to limit damage from Stetson in the sixth to keep it a one-run game. Three more outs in the seventh inning gave Berry her fifth save of the season, Benning her 22nd win of the year and the Ospreys' their record-breaking 43rd victory.
