Assistant Coach Madilyn McCarty Selected as WSF VanDerveer Fellow
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida beach volleyball is excited to announce that it has received a Tara VanDerveer Fund for the Advancement of Women in Coaching grant from the Women's Sports Foundation (WSF®) as released by the organization on Thursday, Sept. 19.Â
Grants were awarded to institutions to support collegiate women coaches on the rise, assisting with living expenses, professional development and mentorship. UNF is one of eight universities and colleges to receive the grants, which are designated for women coaching fellows in a wide variety of women's sports.Â
Assistant coach Madilyn McCarty has been selected as one this year's WSF VanDerveer Fellows in the sixth class chosen by the Women's Sports Foundation.Â
"I was so excited to be chosen as one of this year's WSF VanDerveer Fellows," said McCarty. "It is so encouraging to be a part of a program that recognizes and fosters the growth of women's leadership in sports. This fund assists our program in bringing in a full time position that is able to better support our student athletes as they continue to chase excellence in all they do."
McCarty was recently promoted to assistant coach after serving the last three years as a volunteer assistant coach. She helped lead North Florida beach volleyball to its sixth ASUN Championship this past season and its first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.Â
Under the leadership of McCarty and head coach Doug Wright, the 2024 Ospreys became the first team in program and conference history to sweep the entirety of the ASUN Championship Tournament without conceding a single match point.Â
"For 50 years and counting, the Women's Sports Foundation has known that creating leadership opportunities for women – in coaching and beyond – is vital in order to strengthen the entire sports ecosystem," said WSF CEO Danette Leighton. "When girls and young women have inspiring women role models to look up to, they are motivated to stay engaged and pursue their full potential. That is why we remain dedicated to closing the gender gap in coaching and advancing the legacy of pioneers like Tara VanDerveer through this important Fund."
