Smith Picked to All-Freshman Team, James & Lanier Earn All-Academic Distinctions
ATLANTA - Chaz Lanier represents North Florida men's basketball as a First Team All-ASUN and Academic All-ASUN selection, as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Jaylen Smith was also selected to the ASUN All-Freshman Team, followed with Dorian James earning a spot on the ASUN All-Academic Team.
Lanier becomes the seventh player in program history to garner First Team All-Conference honors, as well as the first since Carter Hendricksen in 2020-21. He adds on a selection to the All-Academic Team to be the lone ASUN player this season to be recognized with both distinctions.
UNF continues its stretch of having an All-Conference selection in all but one season since 2012. It's also the second instance that a UNF player has been a First Team selection and an All-Academic selection in the same season, the first since Hendrickson in 2021.
Smith is the eighth Osprey to be honored as an ASUN All-Freshman selection and the first since Jonathan Aybar in 2020-21. He was thrusted into a starting role the second game of conference play and turned in a memorable season at the point position.
James joins Lanier to have UNF be one of two teams with multiple ASUN All-Academic selections in the same year. It's the second time in three years and the sixth time since 2015 that the Ospreys have produced two or more All-Academic selections.

"Chaz Lanier has done something that no other player in ASUN history has ever accomplished, while receiving incredible pressure from opponents' defensive assignments and schemes. Chaz has handled all of these accolades and limelight with an incrediblely humble attitude validated as the only First Team and Academic All-ASUN selection, which will continue to prosper him into his future endeavors. Chaz's story will hopefully inspire many other student-athletes in any sport to work efficiently, consistently and passionately embracing where your feet are planted with genuine purpose treating others the way you want to be treat. This approach allowed him to have optimum preparation meeting his new opportunity, resulting in success. He has had a historical year on the court, however since day one, his attention to growing his academics has always been at the forefront. It shows his true balance of being a member of the North Florida men's basketball program."

"Jaylen Smith has had one of the most ebbing and flowing seasons that any of our many All-Freshmen selections have faced day in and day out. Jaylen has persevered a non-conference that was filled with a lot of highs and lows, which is typical. However, beginning with our second ASUN regular season game through the end of the season, he became a starter with an amazing amount of personal confidence that has continued to move him forward no matter what the results or statistics. Jaylen has an amazing spirit and appreciation of life, constantly spreading positive energy with his infectious smile, along with academic excellence as well. He takes advantage and earns everything that's been thrown at him since the first time he stepped foot on campus."
