Baseball’s Late-Game Comeback Just Short at EKU

Ospreys Clipped in Series Finale, 6-5

RICHMOND, Ky. - Trailing 6-3 late in the game, UNF (15-13, 4-5 ASUN) scored two in the eighth to get within one, but EKU (12-16, 3-6 ASUN) was able to retire the final four Ospreys that stepped to the plate as North Florida was edged in the rubber game at Eastern Kentucky, 6-5, Sunday, April 2.

Alex Lodise continued to wreak havoc on EKU pitching, lacing a two-out two-RBI triple in the first inning, but EKU took the lead for good with a five-run third that included a two-out grand slam.

The series saw 18 combined home runs and four grand slams, three of which came from UNF. Despite taking the loss, righty Clayton Boroski turned in more promising innings, working a career-long 6.1 frames while permitting only one earned run.

Lodise hit .600 for the weekend, driving in nine while notching six extra-base hits.

Behind the Line Score
  • UNF scored two in the first, generating a two-out rally to take an early lead. Jakob Runnels was hit by a pitch, Gabriel Esquivel singled through the left side and Lodise drove them in with a slicing triple down the right field line.
  • EKU had its first two batters reach in the second, but a 6-4-3 double play and popout quieted the threat.
  • An error, three walks and a Roderick Criss opposite field grand slam gave EKU a 5-2 lead through three.
  • UNF manufactured one in the fifth. Matthew Clements reached on a throwing error and moved up to second on the play. Aidan Sweatt moved him to third with a groundout and Austin Brinling scored his teammate with a lineout sac fly.
  • EKU got that one back in the fifth. Logan Thomason reached on a leadoff triple just over Drew Leinenbach's outstretched arm. A sac fly one batter later scored Thomason.
  • UNF put up two in the eighth, getting within one. After a one-out walk to Runnels, EKU went to Brock Blanton out of the pen. UNF greeted him with a Esquivel double and Lodise RBI single over the span of two pitches. Cherokee Nichols plated another with a sac fly, UNF's second of the game. Leach nearly tied the game, but his liner was snagged at third.
  • The Colonels were able to work a 1-2-3 ninth to hold on.
