Also Picked Up First Career All-Academic Recognition
ATLANTA - North Florida men's soccer sixth-year senior and captain LJ Estes garners ASUN First Team All-Conference honors as a defender for the first time in his career, as announced Friday afternoon by the league office. He also was selected to the ASUN All-Academic team with a 4.0 cumulative GPA in sport management.
This is the fourth time Estes has been selected to an All-ASUN team in his career with him making the All-Freshman team in 2017 and Second Team All-Conference team in 2019 and spring 2021. He becomes the first UNF selection to the First Team All-Conference squad since Adrian Nunez in 2017.
"I am very happy for LJ [Estes] that he was recognized for the ASUN First Team and Academic Team," said head coach Derek Marinatos about his sixth-year senior. "He is a true professional and leader on and off the field."
Estes became the first Osprey since Helge Pietschmann in 2015 to have earned ASUN First Team All-Conference and All-Academic honors in the same season. He also joins Noah Gulden and Sebastian Andreassen as the only players this year to make the First Team All-Conference and All-Academic teams.
The Cantonnent, Fla., native started all 12 games that he's played in this year with 847 total minutes logged on the pitch. He also started six games with eight shots, with three on goal, in 452 minutes of conference play.
On senior night against Liberty, Estes scored his second career goal in what turned out to be the game winner to send the Ospreys to the ASUN postseason. He also recorded a career-high four shots and three shots on goal against the Flames.
After missing the second half of last season due to injury, Estes has been the strong presence for UNF's defense playing the full 90 minutes in five matches on the year, including three conference games. He heads into the ASUN Championship tournament leading a defense that has only allowed one shot on goal in their last three games played.
Estes and the Ospreys will take on fourth-seeded FGCU on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m. EST, to kick off the opening round of the ASUN Championship in Nashville, Tenn.
