JACKSONVILLE -- The North Florida Athletic Department announced the creation of the William Lee "Coach" Moon, Sr. Scholarship Fund to honor the contributions and accomplishments of the former athletic director, who retired this past June.
The Coach Moon Scholarship will be awarded annually to UNF student-athletes who have earned all-conference honors, maintained at least a 3.0 GPA and served as a volunteer in the community. Moon guided North Florida Athletics from 2009-21 and led the Ospreys transition to full-time membership as an NCAA Division I program. During his tenure, UNF captured 46 ASUN Championships (regular season & tournament) and claimed eight River City Rumble titles in the annual competition with crosstown rival JU. North Florida also earned four ASUN Men's All-Sports Championships. Under Moon, the Athletic Department produced 20 consecutive semesters with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and had eight semesters with all 19 varsity teams boasting cumulative GPAs of 3.0 or higher.Â
Named a Division I-AAA Athletic Director of the Year by NACDA in 2021, Moon oversaw the additions of women's golf and beach volleyball as varsity sports for the Ospreys along with serving as a key contributor to securing funds for major facility renovations and upgrades to nearly all of UNF's competition sites. Moon was inducted into the North Florida Athletics Hall of Fame in November.
Other accomplishments achieved during Moon's career at UNF include:
- 85 NCAA Championship Appearances for teams and individuals
- 44 ASUN Players of the Year
- 34 ASUN Freshman of the Year
- 35 ASUN Coaches of the Year
- 27 ASUN Scholar Athletes of the Year
- 901 All-ASUN selections
- 157 ASUN All-Freshmen
- 187 ASUN All-Academic selections
"As the Director of Athletics, Coach Moon had an incredible impact on the University of North Florida and its Athletics Department," said current UNF Athletic Director, Nick Morrow. "The growth of the department in his 12-plus years was absolutely incredible. I am pleased we are able to establish an endowed scholarship in his honor. Thank you to the many donors who have already contributed to the scholarship."
