MATCH NOTES: Men's Soccer Looks for First ASUN Win at Bellarmine

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida men's soccer (2-4-1) will look for its first conference victory of the season when it goes up to Louisville, Ky., to face Bellarmine (4-4-1) on Saturday evening at 7 pm.


WHAT TO KNOW

  • The defense has been stellar for the Ospreys recently, as they have only allowed one shot on goal in each of the past two games.
  • Seniors Jovoney Brown and Bryson Smith lead the team in total shots taken with nine each, while Brown and junior Luto Tom lead the team in shots on goal with five.
  • The Ospreys are third in the conference for shot accuracy at .426% and goalkeeper Carlos Melendez is third in the conference in goals against average with 1.633 GAA.
  • Seniors Giovanny Abreu and Cormac Begley, as well as juniors Herbie Steigelman and Bendeguz Burka, are the only players to start all seven games played this season.
  • Burka leads the team in total minutes played and is the only player for the Ospreys to play 85 minutes or more in each of the team's seven games.


SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

Bellarmine will be looking for their first ASUN win of the season, as they have lost to No. 22 Lipscomb and Central Arkansas to start their conference play. Each of their four wins so far this year has been by one goal, but outside of their loss to Central Arkansas, they have also never lost by more than one goal this season.

Juan Ballas and Pope Brock are the leading scorers for Bellarmine this season with two goals each. Micah Linscott leads their team in shots, with 19, and shots on goal, with nine, despite only recording one goal on the season.

The Knights have more shots per game, 11.1-8-7, and total shots on goal, 36-26, than UNF, but the Ospreys take an advantage with the percentages by leading in shots percentage, .148-.070 and shots on goal percentage, .426-.360. The Osprey defense have also allowed less shots faced, 78-106, for their goalkeepers than Bellarmine.


SERIES HISTORY

- This will be the first-ever matchup between UNF and Bellarmine in program history.
- Bellarmine joined the ASUN conference from Division II before the 2021 spring season, but never played against the Ospreys last season.
- The Knights went 4-4 during the spring, including three ASUN victories, before losing in the semifinals at the ASUN tournament.

The Ospreys will return home from their road stint to play Lipscomb on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Hodges Stadium.
