Ospreys Improve to 3-1 in ASUN
KENNESAW, Ga. - UNF men's tennis (10-9, 3-1 ASUN) won its sixth consecutive doubles point and nabbed four of six singles points to claim the squad's fifth win in as many matches Thursday, April 4, at the Betty Siegel Courts on the campus of Kennesaw State (8-11, 2-2 ASUN).
No. 83 Nilo Duarte and Deshmukh won their fourth match in five outings, cruising past KSU's Lucas deTorres Curth and Harvey Maughan, 6-2. The Owls got one back at the third spot, but Jorge Nunez and Federico Nani came up with the clincher, 6-4.
UNF won the first four singles matches to clinch the match and establish a 5-0 advantage. Deshmukh downed Fermin Calvo Barcelo in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. The senior was the lone victor to claim the match in straight sets.
Duarte dogged Sebastian Osorio's 1-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-4, comeback to put the Ospreys up three. Nunez came through as the clincher once again, upending Kevin Patel, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Freshman Dominik Barton turned in his 20th win during the 2018-19 campaign, outlasting deTorres Curth who had to retire in the third set.
KSU got on the board by winning three-set decisions at the third and sixth slots.
Coach Lucas' Comments
"Glad we were able to pull out the victory. Credit Kennesaw, as they really battled well. The guys are being resilient and confident in tight situations which is great, but we are unnecessarily creating some of these tough situations. We must start closing out sets we have leads in and stop letting guys hang around in matches. If we can correct that I'm really confident we can do some great things. Looking forward to a tough match Saturday."
