Ospreys Power Their Way Past UNI, College of Charleston

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UNF softball pounded out 13 hits to top UNI 8-7, and senior Sydney Matzko permitted only one run on five hits in a complete-game, 5-1, victory against the College of Charleston Saturday, Feb. 16, from the UNF Softball Complex.

UNF is now on a four-game winning streak and has a chance to sweep its UNF Invitational for the second straight season.

Game 1: UNF 8, UNI 7

Pitchers of Record
UNI | Emma Olejniczak (2-1)
UNF | Morgan Clausen (1-1)

Line Scores:
UNI | 7 R, 12 H, 2 E, 11 LOB
UNF | 8 R, 13 H, 2 E, 9 LOB

Behind the Line Score
  • A fielding error allowed UNI (5-4) to go up 1-0 in the top of the first, although UNF created a 3-1 lead behind a Paige Pfent sacrifice fly and a two-RBI single through the left side off the bat of Makenzie Griffin.
  • North Florida's lead ballooned to 6-1 with another three-run inning in the second. Two singles, a hit by pitch and an RBI groundout along with a sacrifice fly was enough for UNF (3-3) to create the five-run cushion.
  • Both teams added a run, but UNI began to claw back into the game with a two-spot in the fifth. Three UNI singles, a wild pitch and a walk made it 7-4, Ospreys.
  • Woodson's fourth hit of the game scored Rindy Bryant, making it 8-4 UNF.
  • Matzko entered the seventh with an 8-5 lead, looking for the save, but not before UNI threatened with two runs. The lefty got UNI's Olivia Brooks to pop out, stranding two runners.
