Softball Splits to Open Weekend

JACKSONVILLE – North Florida senior Ashley Niesman had an RBI double to give the Ospreys a 1-0 victory over Presbyterian, before UNF fell in extras by the same score to Middle Tennessee on Friday at the UNF Softball Complex.

TOP PERFORMERS
- Senior Amanda Blanchard recorded a shutout against Presbyterian as she struck out six to move to 3-0 on the season.
- At the plate, Navia Penrod totaled three hits and a stolen base. Tiffany Lower added two hits with a pair of stolen bases in the two games.
- Three others had a hit on the day with Niesman recording the winning RBI against the Blue Hose.
GAME 1 CAPSULE
- The game was quiet through three innings as both pitchers worked around traffic on the basepaths in each inning.
- In the fourth, Lower stroked a single back up the middle and advanced to second on a stolen base.
- Niesman followed with a double down the left field line to give the Ospreys a 1-0 victory.
- Blanchard (3-0) allowed just two base runners over the final three innings to get the win. She struck out six in her third complete game of the year.Â
GAME 2 CAPSULE
- The first seven innings left a combined five runners on base as both offenses were held in check.
- UNF had a chance in the seventh after Penrod led the inning off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice from Alex Arciola.
- North Florida's threat was thwarted when Penrod was doubled off on a flyball out trying to advance to third and the game went to the eighth.Â
- Middle Tennessee scratched across its run in extras with an RBI single to give them a 1-0 win.
- The Ospreys got a tying runner to third in their half of the eighth, but was thrown out on a play at the plate.
