STATESBORO, Ga. - North Florida men's tennis sophomore Joe Ellis made the final round of the singles B bracket at the Georgia Southern Championship, but fell short in the match in three sets to close up the tournament on Sunday.Â
"This weekend was a great learning experience for the guys," assistant coach Ramon Simonetti said. "We possessed the lead and were in position to win every match that we lost."
Ellis took down Johnny Wang from College of Charleston to earn his way to the finals. He then faced off with Wang's teammate Easton Thomas, but fell short in three sets.
In match play, Nilo Duarte picked up two wins against Francisco Neto (USC Upstate) and Martjin Kerssens (GS) in straight sets. Charley Castain also picked up two wins against Lucas Percy (Upstate) and Robby Krick (CofC).
"It was not the result we wanted but our weaknesses were exposed and now we have to work on it for the spring," Simonetti said.
The tournament wraps up the fall for most of the Ospreys. Selected players will compete next week for a chance to make the ITF Futures in Pensacola beginning on Saturday, Nov. 10.
