Ospreys Win Top Singles and Doubles Flights, Ellis Claims Singles - Flight B Consolation Title
MACON, Ga. - UNF had three title matches on the line Sunday, Oct. 7 at Mercer's Gridiron Classic. When the day was done they had claimed all three, winning the top flights of both singles and doubles while securing the back draw championship in Singles - Flight B.
"It was a great overall weekend from the guys at Mercer," head coach Matt Lucas said. "We faced some tough competition throughout the weekend, so to come away with the titles and doubles of the top flight is impressive."
North Florida was represented on both sides of the Singles - Flight A final, as freshman Dominik Barton and senior Till Von Winning met for the title. Barton bested his teammate to take the title, the third time that two Ospreys faced each other in the Flight A draw.
Senior Sahil Deshmukh and UNF newcomer Jorge Nunez completed a fine weekend by downing North Georgia's Zack Waldow and Kevin Candido to earn the Doubles - Flight A crown. The duo went 5-0 on the weekend, defeating squads from Mercer, Jacksonville State, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State and North Georgia.
After losing a tough three-setter to open the weekend, sophomore Joe Ellis rebounded to turn a perfect run in the consolation singles bracket of Flight B. Ellis took care of Florida Southern's Brandon Pham, 6-1, 1-0, earning the back draw bracket title after Pham withdrew in the second set.
Ellis overcame a Troy Trojan in the Round of 16 before sweeping a trio of Florida Southern players.
