Four Reach Quarterfinals of Flight A Singles On Day One at Mercer

Deshmukh, Nunez and Von Winning Pace All Competitors With 4-0 Day
MACON, Ga. - UNF opened Mercer University's Gridiron Classic on a strong note Friday, Oct. 5. The Ospreys paced all competitors with the most overall wins, featuring four players who advanced on to quarterfinals play in the top flight of singles. Till Von Winning, Sahil Deshmukh and Jorge Nunez had spotless 4-0 records, combining to win 18 of their 19 sets. Dominik Barton will join the trio in the quarters of the top of singles tomorrow.
North Florida brought its full roster to the weekend invitational, with each of the eight slated for a pair of singles and doubles matches. 15 teams and over 150 players take the courts this weekend.
"It was a tough day as far as the elements and conditions were concerned, but we embraced that and handled the challenge well," head coach Matt Lucas said. "I was proud of their fitness level and how they played, both in singles and doubles competition."

Deshmukh cruised by his opening match in the Round of 32, winning 6-2, 6-2. He would open the Round of 16 with the same result in set one before holding on to win 7-6 (1) in the second set. Von Winning, swept both of his singles matches, with the closest being a 6-4 triumph in the first set during the Round of 32.
"Our two seniors in Sahil and Till led the way," Lucas said. "They picked up a pair of doubles and singles wins, with Sahil winning alongside Jorge in doubles."
It was [Jorge] Nunez's UNF debut after missing last week's season-opening Bedford Cup hosted by UCF.
