DURHAM, N.C. - North Florida men's tennis is set to begin the 2017 fall slate on Friday at the Duke James Bone Invitational in Cary, N.C.
Four Ospreys will take part in the Duke James Bonk Invitational, named after a former Duke chemistry professor and assistant tennis coach who passed away in 2013. Juniors Sahil Deshmukh, Alberto De Meo and transfer Till Von Winning along with Nilo Duarte make the trek to North Carolina to compete.
First-year head coach Matt Lucas leads a North Florida squad that won the 2017 ASUN Regular Season Championship and recently had two players ranked in the ITA preseason polls.Â
Deshmukh is coming off a season where he went 26-11 in singles, while posting an 18-6 mark in doubles play en route to being named to the ASUNÂ Second team in singles and doubles. De Meo has been injured over the past two years and is looking to make an impact back on the court.Â
A transfer from Ferris State, a Division II university in Michigan, Von Winning was the 2017 GLIAC Player of the Year after recording a 24-4 mark in singles play. He also helped lead the 15th-ranked Bulldogs to the program's third straight GLIACÂ Championship. A true freshman, Duarte is the Catalonian tennis champion in doubles and singles under 18 and ranked as high as 108 nationally and No. 5 in Spain for players in his age.
After the Duke Invite, North Florida looks ahead to the FGCU Invite for the same crew, while Lasse Muscheites and Jefta Kecic head to Gainesville, Fla. for the UF Ranked 1 Tournament.
