CARY, N.C. - Freshman Nilo Duarte and junior Till Von Winning picked up wins in singles play for North Florida men's tennis as the Ospreys wrapped day one at the Duke James Bonk Invite on Friday.
In singles play, Duarte grabbed a 6-4, 6-2 win against Auburn's Diego Chavarria to advance to the next round. He will face off with Nick Stachowiak from Duke. Von Winning defeated Diego Vives of Princeton, 6-2, 6-3 in the B Singles Bracket. In the second round, Von Winning takes on Josh Peck from North Carolina.
"Today was exactly what we needed. We are able to play a ton of tennis and reallyl evaluate ourselves and where we are at with our level," said first-year head coach Matt Lucas. "We play these fall tournaments to assess were we need to get better. I thought we were inefficient in some areas and showed signs of rust. Its understandable being the first fall event, but I like how our guys competed throughout the day. We will work to improve certain areas tomorrow and continue to grow as players throughout the tournament."
In the A bracket as well, Sahil Deshmukh lost his opening match and now faces George Hedley (Louisville). Alberto De Meo fell in his opening match in the B Bracket as well and now takes on Alex Mascioli (Auburn) in the consolation match.Â
The Ospreys dropped both of the doubles matches in the first rounds of the A and B brackets. Deshmukh and Duarte will face Javier Amantegui and Arvid Noren of VCU in the consolation round. De Meo and Von Winning bounced back to grab an 8-1 win against Alex Mascioli and Viboosh Chandrasekar (Auburn) in their second round and now look to play a pair from North Carolina on Saturday.
Doubles kicks off the day at 9 a.m. tomorrow before singles follows.
