The Short Story: In a pitching duel, North Florida outlasted Bradley for a 4-2 victory in the series opener Friday night at Harmon Stadium. Osprey starter Austin Drury worked a season best 8.1 innings to overcome a complete game effort by Brave starter Nathan Stong (8.0 IP).
LEADING OFFÂ
- North Florida only collected 4 hits on the night but took advantage of a pair of Bradley errors in the second inning to score all four of their runs
- Yahir Gurrola did the most damage at the plate, going 1-for-3 and delivering a two-run single
- Blake Voyles, Alex Merritt and Chris Berry collected the other Osprey hits on the night
- Austin Drury scattered three hits over his 8+ innings of work and faced 31 batters in his 104-pitch night that also included four strikeouts
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- The Ospreys got all the runs they would need in the second inning as Bradley struggled defensively around some timely UNF hits. Chris Berry got things started with a one-out single and moved to second on a balk by Bradley's Stong. Wes Weeks followed with a walk and both runners moved up a base after a wild pitch. After a pop out for Christian Diaz, Yahir Gurrola smashed a two-out single to left field driving in a pair of runs. Gurrola stole second and then moved to third as Blake Voyles reached on an error by the BU shortstop. Gurrola raced home on a passed ball that also advanced Voyles to second. Chris Thibideau lifted a ball high to leftfield that was misplayed and dropped by the Braves outfielder allowing the fourth run to score for UNF.
- Bradley was able to get their first run of the night in the top of the fourth when Luke Mangieri singled for the team's first hit of the night and then scored on a RBI-double by Andreww Ivelia.
- From the 5th thru the 8th inning, both pitchers worked quickly and effectively only allowing a two combined base runners
- BU attempted a rally in the 9th when Ian Kristan connected on his 4th homerun of the season for Bradley's second run of the night. Ivelia followed with a single and Jean-Francois Garon earned a two-out walk before Matthew Naylor struck out pinch hitter Zach Fairchild looking to end the game and earn his second save of the year.
