FORT MYERS, Fla. – The North Florida Softball team dropped their final game of their A-Sun Conference series with Florida Gulf Coast Tuesday afternoon in Fort Myers, Fla.
Â
The Ospreys (19-27, 5-10 A-Sun) now sit in seventh place in the conference, a game out of sixth place with the top six teams qualifying for the conference tournament. The Eagles (27-25, 10-5 A-Sun) take sole possession of first in the conference standings with three games remaining on the schedule.
Â
The Ospreys took an early lead in the top of the third, when senior Shelby Duncan scored sophomore Ashley Niesman on a RBI ground out for the 1-0 lead.
Â
FGCU responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs on four hits for a 3-1 lead after three innings.
Â
North Florida halved the lead in the top of the fifth, with Duncan scoring freshman Navia Penrod on a RBI single, making the score 3-2. The Ospreys' offense couldn't get anything else going in the final two innings, with 3-2 being the final score.
Â
Duncan finished 2-for-3 with both of the team's RBIs to lead the offense, while senior Janet Snipe threw a complete game in the losing effort.
Â
The Ospreys are back in action this Saturday and Sunday. They return home for their season finale against USC Upstate. North Florida will need to win at least two games in the series and get some help in the league for a shot at a berth in the A-Sun Tournament.
