MARANA, Ariz. -- The No. 36-ranked North Florida men's golf squad carded a 293 (+5) Monday in opening round play of the NCAA Tucson Regional at The Gallery Golf Club at Dove Mountain.
The Ospreys, who are playing in an NCAA Regional for the seventh consecutive season, currently rank in 8th place and are just six shots out of the Top 5. UNF is looking to advance to the NCAA Championship in two weeks, with the Top 5 teams after 54 holes of playing earning the coveted spots.
Freshman Andrew Alligood led the way for UNF firing a 1-under 71 in his postseason debut, to sit tied for 15th in the medalist standings. Fellow freshman Travis Trace carded an even-par 72 (T23) and sophomore Dillon Woods finished with a 1-over 73 (T31).
Senior Taylor Hancock, making his fifth appearance in an NCAA postseason event, ended the day tied for 57th after a 77 while freshman Philip Knowles rounded out the Osprey lineup in 69th place following his round of 82.
"I was proud of the way the guys battled and competed all day," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "We had some good golf but also struggled with some bad golf. Overall, we didn't putt as well as we would have liked but that leaves us some room for improvement. We just need to stick to our game plan and just be patient because this is not a course that you can be really aggressive."

No. 1-ranked Stanford leads the 14-team field after shooting an opening round 274 (-14). No. 37 UAB is currently second at 283 with No. 24 Oregon (285), No. 12 Wake Forest (286) and No. 13 California (287) filling out the Top 5 listing.
UC Riverside's Matt Lutz tops the medalist by one shot after posting a first round 6-under 66.
Tournament action at the Tucson Regional continue with second round play Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m. ET. The Ospreys will begin play on Hole 10 at 10 a.m. alongside St. Mary's and North Texas. Live scoring results for the event are available online at Golfstat.com.
