KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- The No. 34-ranked North Florida men's golf team posted rounds of 294-290 in challenging conditions Saturday on opening day play of the Irish Creek Collegiate at The Club at Irish Creek.
The Ospreys finished the 36-hole day in eighth-place with a two-round total of 584. Senior Taylor Hancock led the way for UNF on day one firing rounds of even par 71 followed by a 1-over 72 to rank tied for 12th at 143. The freshmen duo of Andrew Alligood and Travis Trace joined him among the Top 25, wrapping up the day tied for 20th (74-72=146) and 25th (72-75=147), respectively.
"We played really hard for most of the day," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "We grinded pretty well but had just too many mistakes that should have been avoided. This will hopefully be a good learning lesson for all the young guys because it was very different than anything we've seen all season."
Freshman Philip Knowles is tied for 35th at 148 after rounds of 77 and even-par 71, while sophomore Jordan Batchelor rounded out the Ospreys lineup with scores of 78-79, to rank 79th (157).
Atlantic Sun rival Kennesaw State leads the team competition with a two-round total of 567 with No.14-ranked Wake Forest in second at 568. VCU is third at 573 followed by UNC Wilmington (577) and No. 24 North Carolina (579) in the Top 5. James Madison's Ryan Cole tops the medalist standings following rounds of 67-70=137 (-5).
Tournament action concludes with a final round of 18 holes on Sunday slated to begin with shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. North Florida will be paired with JMU and Davidson starting on holes 7-9.
