JACKSONVILLE - Four of six singles matches pushed to three sets, but North Florida men's tennis prevailed with a 5-2 victory against Kennesaw State on Saturday evening at the UNF Tennis Courts.
"It was a really great win. I am really proud of the guys," said head coach Mark Finnegan. "All season long we have talked about what it means to be a real team and it has been a really tough week dealing with adversity and injuries, but the guys competed hard with character tonight to ultimately pull through and have a great win against a really feisty, tough Kennesaw State team. They are well coached and fought until the very end and they should be proud of themselves. It was just a really great college tennis match."
The match was tightly contested from the beginning as two of the doubles matches went to 7-5. Jack Findel-Hawkins and Julian Bradley paired up in the No. 1 position for a 6-4 win. Kennesaw State then won in the No. 2 position, before Andrey Alawi and Lasse Muscheites grabbed a come-from-behind 7-5 win in the No. 3 spot for the doubles point.Â
Bradley was the first to finish in singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 position as all the other Osprey victories came in three sets. Kennesaw got its first point with a victory in the No. 6 match. Freshman Sahil Deshmukh put UNF up 3-1 with a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win before the Owls got their second point in the No. 1 spot.Â
With the match tied at 3-2, sophomore Muscheites clinched the No. 2 match with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win to clinch the match for UNF to move the Ospreys to 2-1 in A-Sun play. Jonathan Deautriell then wrapped up the wins after he bounced back from a first-set loss with back-to-back 6-4 victories in the No. 5 spot.
