Pair of School Records Highlight Men's Track Efforts

JACKSONVILLE -- North Florida men's track and field standouts Nick Morken and Fynn Timm broke a pair of school records in leading a strong day of performances. The Ospreys had athletes competing Friday at both the Florida Relays in Gainesville and the Spikes Classic in Daytona Beach.
Competing at the prestigious Florida Relays, Morken, a sophomore, bettered the 13-year old 1,500m record by three seconds, posting a personal best time of 3:42.56. Timm, a freshman, raced to a time of 8:55.98 in the 3,000m Steeplechase topping the previous mark set in 1987 by almost three seconds.
"Nick and Fynn both had outstanding performances," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "Both of their times should have them solidly qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary. Nick's time in the 1,500m is equivalent to running a sub-four minute mile and was a career best for him by over three seconds. Fynn's time was seven seconds faster than he'd ever ran as well."
Sophomore Tyler Stahl ran a personal best 3:50 in the 1,500m and sophomore Brad Hort recorded a 15:08.79 in the 5000m on Thursday night.
At the Spikes Classic hosted by Embry-Riddle, freshman Logan Poteet ran a personal record 3:53 in the 1,500m to finish second in the event while Wesley Norton was fifth in the event at 3:59.40. Manny Velasquez won the 3,000m Steeplechase in his outdoor debut with a time of 9:36.36 while junior Michael Damato finished third in 14:48.11 in the 5,000m. Senior Desmond Robb qualified for the 200m finals after sprinting to a time of 21.81 in the prelims.
Competition at both the Florida Relays and Spikes Classic concludes with a final day of events on Saturday.
