JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida men's tennis picked up its first conference victory with a 7-0 shut out against Lipscomb on Thursday evening at the UNF Tennis Courts.
The Ospreys move to 1-1 in the Atlantic Sun and 6-10 overall, while Lipscomb drops to 6-8 and 0-2 in A-Sun play. UNF has a busy weekend ahead with Kennesaw State and NJIT coming to town.
The home team opened the match with the doubles point after winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. Jonathan Deautriell and Sahil Deshmukh combined for an easy, 6-1, victory in the #3 spot before Jack Findel-Hawkins and Julian Bradley paired up for a 6-2 win in the No. 2 position.
Bradley turned around during singles action to grab a 6-2, 6-2, win in the No. 3 match before Deshmukh followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the No. 5 spot. UNF then turned its attention to Findel-Hawkins in the No. 1 spot who battled to a 6-4, 6-3 win against Rob Mitchell to clinch the match. It was Findel-Hawkins' first singles victory in conference action as the junior battled injuries in his previous two seasons and was unable to play singles in A-Sun.
After the clinch, Zach Goldberg battled from being down 1-4 in the second set to beat Daniell Cardenas, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 4 position. Deautriell continued his strong play with a three-set battle that included a solid hit past Thais Minet to clinch his match. Deautriell won, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to give UNF the 6-0 lead. Sophomore Lasse Muscheites raced out to a 6-0 lead in the first set and looked to be on pace to finish first in the singles match, but Alejandro Manzanares battled back to tie the set with a 7-5 win. The duo pushed back and forth early in the third set, knotting the scoring at 3-all, but Muscheites dug deep and pulled out the win with a 6-3 third set.
The shutout is the first since March 26, 2015 when the Ospreys downed Kennesaw State, 4-0. UNF also got a shut out against Northern Kentucky in the match before.
