
Beach @OspreyVB Heads to Carolina Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C. - North Florida beach volleyball closes up its spring break schedule with a trip to the Carolina Classic hosted by the University of South Carolina at Wheeler Beach on Saturday and Sunday. UNF faces off with Jacksonville State and Louisiana-Monroe at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively on Saturday before taking on FAU (11 a.m.) and the hosts, South Carolina (1 p.m.) on Sunday.
South Carolina's home facility, was renamed Wheeler Beach prior to this season and is considered one of the finest collegiate beach volleyball venues in the nation. The five-court facility opened in 2014.
UNF enters the Carolina Classic at 5-2 on the year and is currently on a three-game winning streak.Senior Ambre Desaulnay and freshman Chaney Howard own a 5-0 record at the No. 4 spot, while three other pairs own a 4-3 mark. Preseason All-Conference selection Jessalyn Kinlaw and the Player to Watch Megan Crawshaw own a 4-3 mark in the No. 1 spot, while Lauren Ford and Kimberly Ferguson own the same. In the No. 3 position, Courtney Miller and Katarina Raicevic have posted the same record and are on a three-match win streak.
FAU enters the Carolina Classic at 3-1 on the year. The Owls opened their season at the Burrow Beach Bash where it split with UNF with a 4-1 win for the Owls before the Ospreys won 3-2 in the second meeting. Owls' graduate student Delaney Clesen was named to the CCSA preseason Watch List. Clesen marked a 10-5 record last season. Clesen and partner Gabrielle Dischler are 4-0 this season and have won three out of four matches in straight sets
Head coach Terry Gamble's beach squad consists of seven players from the fall indoor season, along with three spring newcomers in Anna Katherine O'Leary, Hope Gaskin and Jordan Moorer. The Gamecocks will open their inaugural season with a bang taking on some of the top talent in the country.
The Warhawks enter their fourth season as a program and are under the direction of Patrick Hiltz. Louisiana-Monroe is 1-4 on the season with its lone win coming against New Orleans. ULM returned six members from last year's squad and welcomed seven newcomers, with eight of the 13 members crossing over from the indoor program.
The Gamecocks are in their third season under the direction of head coach Moritz Moritz after going 14-7 in the program's second season in 2015. Carolina's roster boasts 20 players with 11 returners11 players from last year's roster are back. Four of the players on this year's roster – Sarah Blomgren, Darian Dozier, Aubrey Ezell, Emma Lock – are crossover players from the Carolina indoor program. The Gamecocks are now 4-0 in home matches this season and 13-5 all-time at Wheeler Beach, including 3-2 in 2014 and 6-3 in 2015.
The first match against Jacksonville State will be the first meeting between the two teams, while the Ospreys lead the all-time series with the other Gamecocks - South Carolina, 2-0. The teams first met in 2014 when UNF defeated Carolina 4-1 and the teams met for the second time in 2015 at the UNF Sand Invitational where North Florida edged South Carolina 3-2. UNF is currently 5-2 against FAU with a 1-1 record against the Owls this season. Last season, the Ospreys dropped a 3-2 decision to Louisiana Monroe last season, but have a 2-2 record against the Warhawks overall.
