WINSTON SALEM, N.C. -- Bolstered by five event championships, the North Florida men's track and field squad captured a second consecutive runner-up finish in the Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor Championships at JDL Fast Track on Saturday.
North Florida freshman Logan Poteet followed his victory in the 3,000 meter race on Friday with a win in the mile race on Saturday, recording a time of 4:14.93. Desmond Robb continued that success for the Ospreys winning the 400 meter race with a time of 49.59 while senior Taylor Sumapang claimed the title in the 800 meter (1:54.90). North Florida also featured wins from Bobby Harris, who repeated as champion in the high jump with personal best school record of 2.10m (6-10.75), a team victory in the 4x400 relay race, edging out USC Upstate with a time of 3:24.31.
"This was such a great meet for our program," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "We had some many wonderful stories make this such a special day. The team has worked extremely hard and that dedication paid off in today's finish."
Poteet paced a group of four scoring runners in the 3,000 as Tyler Stahl was third (4:16.56), Fynn Timm was fourth (4:16.75) and Bradley Langenberg finished sixth (4:22.41).Â
"Logan had a great weekend," added Pigg. "He is a fierce competitor. Tyler also had a very good meet, while Finn followed up his anchor leg performance in the DMR with a 4th along with Bradley's scoring performance."
Robb followed up his 400m victory with a fourth place finish in the 200m (22.748), while fellow senior Maurice Sapp edged him in the 200 (22.742) and finished just behind him in the 400 in third (49.95). The duo also opened and anchored the 4x400m title winning group.
"Maurice never gave up on his goal of winning an ASun title," Pigg continued. "He and Desmond have worked so hard together and knew that if they brought their A-games we could finish in second as a team. Their effort led the way for a fantastic meet for the men. The 4x4 was truly dramatic as second runner Cristian Acuna was tripped up but kept his wits and gave chase to the pack. Taylor Sumapang closed the gap even more and handed off to Maurice to seal the victory."
Sumapang was one of the biggest surprises of the day, as he entered the 800 meter race with the 25th ranked time in the conference. He blazed to a winning time in the opening heat of the event and his time held up for the win. Rayford James (1:55.99) and Cristian Acuna (1:56.67) also earned points in the event after finishing third and fifth, respectively.
The Ospreys had a pair of scorers in the 5,000 meter as Brad Hort collected a third-place showing with a time of 14:59.58 followed in fourth by Michael Damato in 15:12.07.
North Florida finished the Indoor Championships with a total of 119 points.
