Final Boxscore (pdf)
BATON ROUGE, La. -- The North Florida men's basketball team battled against LSU but came up just shy Friday night in a 78-70 loss at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.Â
Senior Chris Davenport led a quartet of Ospreys (1-3) in double-digits, finishing with 16 points to go along with his six rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots. Romelo Banks, Dallas Moore and Aaron Bodager each chipped in 13 points on the night. Banks narrowly missed his second double-double of the year, pulling down a team-high nine rebounds, as the Ospreys out-rebounded a much taller LSU lineup by 10 boards, 44-34.
Antonio Blakeney led all scorers with 20 points for the Tigers (3-0), who saw three other players also reach double digits.
The two teams featured strong defenses early in the contest as things closely contested. Midway through the opening stanza, LSU used a quick 9-4 spurt to grab the momentum and a 24-15 lead with about eight minutes left to play. The Tigers would extend the margin to double digits before the Ospreys mounted a charge late in the period, outscoring LSU, 10-2, over the final four minutes. UNF's closing surge trimmed the deficit to a single point, 34-33, at the halftime break.
Out of the break, both offenses began to run more efficiently with North Florida pushing in front 47-44 after scorinng 14 points in the first four minutes. LSU answered with a 15-3 spurt to regain the lead, 56-49, with just under 12 minutes remaining. The Tigers followed that surge by scoring seven of the next 10 points allowing them to widen their lead to a game high 12 points, 66-54, at the 6:28 mark.
The Ospreys refused to fade though, rallying with a 9-1 run that made the score, 67-63, with about four minutes left. UNF had the ball with a chance to pull even closer but a turnover and a couple missed shots allowed LSU to widen the gap after a brief 8-3 spurt. The Tigers were able to convert free throws in the closing minute to secure the victory.
North Florida next returns home to host Florida National on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Quotable...
"We're growing up. The guys fought tonight and we didn't let the lead that they (LSU) built in the second half demoralize us. We were in a place where we were able to continue to fight and to our guys' credit, they cut it (the lead) to under four points at the four-minute media timeout. They just kept on fighting. We, obviously, left so much on the table. We had 20 turnovers. We were 13-for-28 from the free-throw line. It's hard to beat anybody, let alone an SEC team, when you're doing that to yourself. It's hard to defend when you're doing that to yourself. The amazing thing is, our guys kept believing, they kept on fighting, and I think rebounding is probably why we were able to stay in the game and fight to get back in the game. I thought Romelo Banks was as good of a player on the floor tonight. I'm so happy for him and excited for him that he's back to what he does. I'm proud of our fight, but I don't like learning from losing. We have a big week next week. We have four more games. We just played four games in eight days back-to-back after one day in between. Then we have a four-game deal so that will be eight games in 17 days. I was proud of the way played tonight after wedidn't perform Wednesday night, we came and handled our business Thursday night, and it showed on the court tonight. We'll be fine if our guys continue to believe. I thought they did that tonight." -- Head coach Matthew Driscoll
