JACKSONVILLE -- North Florida freshmen standouts Nick Morken and Eden Meyer capped off their stellar debut collegiate campaigns with solid showings on the opening day of competition in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary at Hodges Stadium.
Morken, a Niceville, Fla, native, finished seventh in his heat (37th overall) of the 800m in the third fastest time of his career running a time of 1:49.90. He ended his rookie season as one of the most decorated runners in program history having claimed the Most Outstanding Freshman Performer in both the Atlantic Sun Indoor and Outdoor Championships along with posting the league's fastest outdoor times in both the 800m and 1,500m this season.
A Jacksonville native, Meyer concluded her inagural season with a 31st place finish in the 10,000m, running a time of 35:30.61. Her time was the third fastest of her career.
"It was a great year for both of these athletes," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "We are so proud of what they did and accomplished. They are definitely part of a solid foundation to build our program on. Eden and Nick are focused and driven to do what they need to do to get back here and continue to grow and improve next year. Overall I'm extremely excited of how they both competed tonight. Having them compete at the NCAA Prelim on our home track also makes this event much more fun for our team, staff and fans."
North Florida's program record tying four athlete contingency continues competition at the NCAA East Preliminary on Friday with senior Elle Baker running in the 3000m steeplechase (8:50 p.m.) and freshman Bobby Harris competing in the high jump (5:00 p.m).Â
