JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The No. 26-ranked North Florida men's golf team posted a 3-2 win in match play over No. 37 Florida on Friday afternoon in the Statesboro Blues Cup held at Timuquana Country Club.
The Ospreys and Gators added this event after both programs lost a day of competition earlier this season due to weather. The competition provided both programs the opportunity to play a format similar to the way the NCAA Championship is decided.
"It was a great battle with Florida today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "The match was really close and a great experience for everyone involved. The guys did a great job and its always nice to pull out a win. Taylor played outstanding in earning a 6 and 5 victory while Austin and Joey also did a great job of coming back to earn their wins."
UNF wins were earned by juniors Austin Padova and Taylor Hancock as well as senior Joey Petronio. Florida's two wins came from AJ Crouch and Eric Banks.
Hancock got the Ospreys on the board first with a dominating 6&5 victory over Alejandro Tosti with Padova pushing the lead to 2-0 for UNF after defeating Ryan Orr 2up. The Gators collected their first point as Crouch edged redshirt freshman Dillons Woods 2&1 and then even the match as Banks outlasted senior Parker Jones in 19 holes. Petronio and UF's JD Tomlinson advanced their deciding match to the final hole with UNF tallying the 1up win.
North Florida will now conclude their regular season schedule at the Irish Creek Collegiate on Apr. 11-12 in Kannapolis, N.C.
