Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis earned its second victory in as many days with a 7-0 shutout of Jackson State Sunday morning at the UNF Tennis Complex.
Â
"I am happy with how professional and poised we were regardless of the level of the opponent," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We did not wait for Jackson State to make mistakes. Instead, we created our own offense and took the matches from them on every court."
Â
UNF dominated the doubles competition, using a pair of shutout victories to clinch the doubles point. Luise Intert and Rebeca Pereira cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles over Anatasia Zvyahintseva and Siriporn Phakamad. Marina Cunningham and Michelle Valdez overpowered Julia Angermann and Karina Ono the No. 3 spot for the doubles-clinching point. The No. 2 doubles match ended almost immediately after the No. 3 doubles with Quetzali Vazquez and Esther Zuniga taking a 6-2 win over Ilona Zuishliuk and Dari Butorina.
Â
UNF quickly picked up three singles victories. Valdez took a 6-0, 6-3 win over Zuishliuk at No. 2 singles to give the Ospreys a 2-0 lead. Cunningham's 6-1, 6-2 triumph against Butorina at No. 3 singles gave UNF the three-point advantage, while Vazquez earned the match-winning point at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Â
Pereira added a 6-1, 6-2 No. 5 singles triumph over Karina Ono. On the No. 6 court, Mariella Calderon cruised past Siriporn Phakamad 6-1, 6-2. Zuniga held on for a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Zvyahintseva at No. 1 singles.
Â
